Death, again...

November 27, 2008 01:14PM

Yesterday morning I got the news that a former colleague of over 20 years had passed away of a heart attack. Though he had known of his heart problems for a couple of years, it still seems a tragic loss, as he was quite young, aged 47.

It is odd how these things do seem to occur in threes, as this is the third former co-worker at this company to die in the last few months. The first was in his 50s, the second in his 20s, and now this latest one. The current death hits the hardest, as this was someone that I knew since I started working with him in 1985.

Another disturbing trend that I have noticed: men dying just a few years after their fathers. I attended this co-worker's father's funeral just 3 years ago, and now I'll be going to his tomorrow.

I am reminded of how much it sucks to have a tragic loss at the time of a holiday. My own father died 2 days before Thanksgiving back in 2002, which continues to cast a shadow over the holiday for my family. I am sure the family of my former colleague is feeling much of the same.

Sometimes I am amazed at all the death that I have experienced up to this point in life. In a sad way, it hardens you (well, it does me, anyway) to the pain that will occur the next time. I can feel the emotional nerve endings withering away each time.

So, a bit of sadness on this Thanksgiviing, but also thankfulness for those that used to be in my life that are gone: a best friend, a brother, a father, several colleagues, two fathers-in-law, all 4 grandparents, a couple of cats...I'll drink a spiked egg nog to you tonight!

It isn't quite 15 minutes of fame... it isn't even 15 seconds, but that's me, in the bottom right corner of the capture (in case it isn't obvious ), taken from the 1:20 mark. Opening footage from Helsinki, very nice, I am only visible for maybe a second as the camera pans the front rows of the Olympic Stadium. But, I can easily pick out some of the folks I was standing with, niels, the seemingly ever-present UK76, the "Gabble Ratchet" folks, and a few others...

Good stuff!

Thank you, Genesis!!!
